No single person should constitute election petition tribunals – Jonathan

FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan has said that no single person should have the power to appoint all the election petition tribunals. This is as Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said that the problems of Nigeria were self-inflicted as they flowed from politicisation of everything and the promotion of pervasive injustice.Jonathan, who made this remark during a lecture/book presentation to mark the second term inauguration of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt on Monday, explained that allowing a single person to appoint election petition tribunals would erode the confidence in the system. “The judicial process where one person constitutes all the election tribunals to hear petitions is not right. It is difficult in a democracy for somebody to be extremely neutral.“In one way or the other, somebody close to you will be in one party or the other. The only way to be above is to make sure that one person does not have all the powers to constitute tribunals t...

Seized $5.7m: Nobody complained I stole money, says Patience Jonathan

Wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, on Friday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the release of the $5.7m and N2.4bn seized from her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Her lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), urged Justice Mojisola Olatoregun to dismiss the application by the EFCC, praying that the money be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. Adedipe argued that it was wrong for the EFCC to tag the money as proceeds of crime, when Patience had committed no crime and when nobody complained that their money was missing. The SAN said the funds were cash gifts which Patience received when her husband was in office. Adedipe said such gifts were normal, pointing out that even the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, was seeking to build a university. The lawyer contended that Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud, which EFCC relied upon to seize Patience’s funds, was only applicable to fraudsters. “It is not the law...

Tokyo’s stock market slumped on Thursday amid concerns over the impact of the Huawei sanctions on Japanese suppliers. The Nikkei index for 225 leading stocks lost 0.6 per cent of its value to reach 21,151.14 points. The U.S. last week placed Huawei on a blacklist of companies whose business relationships with U.S. partners are t...
